Avola is only 15 minutes from Noto and 30 minutes from Syracuse, making it an ideal logistical base for exploring the Val di Noto and the island's Greco-Roman heritage. In this guide you will find stages, timetables, travel times and practical tips so you don't miss anything.

When to leave and how to organise your day

The key to this itinerary is to leave early. We recommend leaving Avola by 08:30 to reach Noto before the crowds. Attractions generally open at 09:00 and the morning hours are the coolest, especially in summer. The afternoon is dedicated to Syracuse, with return to Avola by 19:30-20:00.

Recommended means of transport: the car is the most flexible choice. Alternatively, there are regular AST buses connecting Avola to Noto (about 20-25 min) and Noto to Syracuse (about 50 min), with hourly frequencies during peak hours.

Stage 1 - Noto (08:30-12:30)

Route from Avola: 15 minutes by car (SS115 towards Noto).

Noto is one of the most accomplished examples of Sicilian Baroque architecture, entirely rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake. Corso Vittorio Emanuele - the main pedestrian thoroughfare - is the heart of the city: everything can be reached on foot in a few minutes.

What to see in Noto

Cathedral of St Nicholas - It opens at 09:00. Going up to the bell tower offers a panoramic view over the golden roofs of Netino Baroque. Admission to the bell tower: about 3 €.

Ducezio Palace - Home to the Town Hall, the façade is one of the symbols of the city. The interior can be visited on request.

Nicolaci di Villadorata Palace - The balconies with zoomorphic corbels are among the most photographed in Sicily. It usually opens at 10 a.m., admission about 4 €.

Royal Gate - The triumphal arch that marks the entrance to the old town: not to be missed for a photo opportunity.

Practical advice: Park at the Paolo Borsellino car park (for a fee, near Porta Reale) or in via Zanardelli. Avoid the centre during peak summer hours: between 10am and 12pm it gets very lively, but by 9am it is already quiet. Before leaving for Syracuse treat yourself to a granita with brioche in one of the historic bars on the Corso: it is a Sicilian ritual.

Lunch break - Noto or along the way (12:30-13:30)

You have two options: have lunch in Noto before leaving, or stop in Cassibile, a small town along the SS115, where several trattorias offer traditional Syracuse cuisine at reasonable prices. Alternatively, take a packed lunch with you and make a stop at the Vendicari Nature Reserve (approx. 10-minute diversions from the SS115): not on the day's schedule, but if you have time it is a landscape worth the diversions.

Stage 2 - Syracuse: Ortigia (13:30-17:30)

Route from Noto: about 35-40 minutes by car (SS115 then motorway junction).

Syracuse is one of the oldest cities in the Mediterranean, founded by the Greeks in 734 BC. The tourist heart is Ortigia, the island connected to the mainland by two bridges, where Greek, Roman, Norman and Baroque history coexist in a few square kilometres.

What to see in Ortigia

Cathedral Square - One of the most beautiful squares in Italy. The Cathedral of Syracuse is built around the columns of a 5th century BC Greek temple, still visible inside. Admission: about 2 €.

Source Arethusa - The legendary freshwater spring overlooking the sea, with papyrus and ducks. Free admission, open all day.

Maniace Castle - At the southern end of Ortigia, overlooking the Mediterranean. Variable opening hours (check the City of Syracuse website); admission approx. €4.

Via della Maestranza and Lungomare Alfeo - Ideal for a stroll with a view of the harbour.

Practical advice: Park on the Lungomare di Levante or at the Thales car park (for a fee). Ortigia can be explored entirely on foot: it is compact and pedestrianised at its heart. Afternoons are the best time to visit - the low sunlight illuminates the Baroque buildings spectacularly.

Stage 3 - Syracuse: Neapolis Archaeological Park (optional, 14:00-16:30)

If archaeology is your priority, consider reversing the order and visiting the Neapolis Archaeological Park - on the continental side of Syracuse - and then Ortigia in the late afternoon.

Greek Theatre - Carved into the rock in the 5th century B.C., it is among the best preserved ancient theatres in the world. From May to July, it hosts classical performances by INDA.

Ear of Dionysus - An ear-shaped karstic cave with extraordinary acoustics.

Roman Amphitheatre - Adjacent to the Greek theatre.

Admission to the park: approx. €13 (includes Greek Theatre, Ear of Dionysius, Roman Amphitheatre and Paolo Orsi Museum with cumulative ticket). Open from 09:00 until one hour before sunset.

Recommended time: at least 1.5-2 hours to visit the park at leisure.

Return to Avola (17:30-19:30)

From Syracuse to Avola, the quickest route is the SS115 (about 30 minutes). If you want to end the day on a relaxing note, Avola is only 6 minutes from the sea: Lido di Avola and Gallina beach are perfect for an evening swim or a stroll along the seafront at sunset.

Itinerary at a glance - times

Timetable

Stage

Travelling time

08:30

Departure from Avola

—

08:45

Arrival at Noto

15 min from Avola

08:45-12:30

Visit Noto

~4 hours

12:30-13:30

Lunch (Noto or along the way)

—

13:30

Departure for Syracuse

35-40 min from Noto

14:15

Arrival in Syracuse

—

14:15-17:30

Visit Ortigia (and/or Neaples)

~3 hours

17:30

Departure for Avola

30 min

18:00

Return to Avola

—

Logistical advice

Summer (June-August): Bring water, sun cream and a hat. Temperatures can exceed 35°C. Leave early to take advantage of the cooler hours in Noto.

Tickets: No compulsory reservation for churches in Noto (except for special events). For the Archaeological Park of Syracuse in high season it is advisable to buy online.

Parking: In both Noto and Ortigia the historic centres are ZTL. Park outside and walk: the distances are short.

Bus: AST Noto-Siracusa runs with reduced frequency at weekends. Check the timetables on astsicilia.it before you travel.

Wallet: Many museums accept cards, but it is useful to have a few euros in cash for offerings in churches and car parks.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do Noto and Syracuse in one day from Avola?

Yes, it is one of the most popular routes among our B&B guests. Avola is 15 minutes from Noto and 30 minutes from Syracuse, which makes the combination manageable in a full day starting early in the morning.

Is it better to visit Noto first or Syracuse first?

We recommend starting with Noto: it is closer to Avola, more compact and is best visited in the morning when there are fewer crowds. Syracuse, larger and more articulated, is best in the afternoon with the warm light on Ortigia.

How long does it take to Noto?

To see the main monuments of the Corso Vittorio Emanuele, 3-4 hours are enough. If you also want to explore the side streets or stop for lunch, calculate half a full day.

Is there convenient parking in Ortigia, Syracuse?

Yes. The most convenient car park is the Talete car park, a short walk from the bridge at the entrance to Ortigia. Alternatively, you can park on the Lungomare di Levante (for a fee). Avoid entering Ortigia by car: the centre is ZTL.

Is Avola also a good starting point for other excursions in Sicily?

Absolutely. In addition to Noto and Siracusa, from Avola you can easily reach the Vendicari Nature Reserve (20 min), Modica and Ragusa (45-60 min), the Ispica Quarries (40 min) and Sampieri beach (50 min). Its central location in the Val di Noto makes it an ideal base for exploring the baroque and rural landscape of south-eastern Sicily.

Itinerario da Avola: Noto e Siracusa in un giorno Partire da Avola e visitare in un solo giorno due delle città più belle della Sicilia orientale è non solo possibile, ma anche sorprendentemente comodo.
